It's hard not to adore this spot. While not exclusively vegetarian, Lula Cafe is sure bet for those leading a meat-free, organic or feel-good lifestyle. Though the daily specials (located on the left side of the menu) usually dip into the $20 range for entrees, the every day menu offers plenty of delights for well under $10.
Those looking for a tofu kick should head straight for the chilled peanut satay noodles with gomae and marinated tofu; the tofu scramble with miso sauce, fruit, home fries and toast is a favorite breakfast option. Personally, I can't get enough of the beet bruschetta, four giant pieces of bread layered with greens, hunks of goat cheese and oil-marinated beets for an unbeatable $7.
Specials are generally unpronounceable and unfamiliar (like whole-roasted branzino and torchio with soppressata), but it's hard to go wrong with any pick. There's a solid wine list, a few specialty cocktails and some of the city's best carrot cake. Brunch is a winner, with long waits; if there's a wait at night, try dinner at the small bar.
