Editorial Review of Michael's North

This isn't the place to go for gourmet grub. Heck, this isn't even the place patrons flock to for cheap prices and no-fuss meals. But walk by after the bars close and you will find Michael's North packed with boozers and insomniacs.

Although the greasy spoon has notoriously so-so food at city prices, people always come back. Its location, at the corner of Clark and North, is the key to the crowd. Many unknowing Chicago Historical Society visitors will go there and leave confused about the unorthodox, laissez-faire serving style or the unexpected food (French onion soup is served without a crouton in the middle or cheese on top.) The bare-bones decor looks like the inside of a Waffle House in the South, save for an open kitchen. There are simple booths and tables, enough for at least 100 starving after-hours eaters. There might be a wait for a booth, and you might encounter a drunk or snotty server, but hey, this isn't The Ritz. Michael's North is your basic all-night diner that seats more customers at 3 a.m. than at 3 p.m.

While the food here is normal diner stuff–fried appetizers, burgers, eggs and dinners –the portions are big (the Jack Daniels now lining your stomach will thank you). All dinners come with your choice of soup or salad, as long as the server remembers, and some even come with dessert! A burger will run you right around $11, depending on your toppings (bacon, cheese, etc.), chicken tenders are $9 with fries and a full-on dinner–such as turkey with all the trimmings-is around $12.99.

However, since it's likely nearing the breakfast hour, your best bet is two eggs with meat, hash browns and toast for $6.99. You will need those carbs to refuel for tomorrow...er...rather, today.
