The Palermo bakery, which already has two locations (one on Harlem in Chicago and one in Franklin Park), replaces a Cold Stone Creamery in Old Town. The bakery offers some of the same baked goods and cannoli, but the new Old Town location is the first to offer gelato, which will satisfy your sweet tooth.

Tempting treats include lemon taralle cookies that have yummy lemon-sugar frosting; amaretti cookies with a crispy exterior that gives way to a chewy, almond-flavored center; almond-topped cherry cookies; coconut macaroons and many other types of cookies. Also, fresh, lattice-topped apple and blueberry tarts, lemon squares, croissants, pineapple mousse, almond cheesecake and other baked goods fill glass cases. Sandwiches are also served.

Rotating flavors of gelato and sorbet entice customers and keep them coming back: vanilla, hazelnut, champagne, cantaloupe, mango and many more. A small serving with half divine amaretto gelato and half refreshing rose petal gelato makes for a good afternoon trip and calls for repeat visits.
