On the early morning of July 24, 1915, a boat called The Eastland began boarding, full of factory workers and their families excited for the company outing across Lake Michigan. However, before even casting off, the boat tipped over in the Chicago River, and in a matter of minutes, 844 men, women and children were dead. In the play, a kaleidoscopic journey through the day’s events is guided by three characters: Bobbie Aanstad, a fourteen-year old girl, trying to stay alive by treading water and stay sane by re-treading her own memories; Ilse, a factory worker who finds herself banging on the hull of her marriage even as she bangs on the hull of the boat; and Reggie Bowles, a hyperactive, quixotic young man determined to pull as many bodies out of the water, dead or alive, as he can.
