Comedy and tragedy come together in Pinter's complex play.

When it comes to evoking dank, working-class despair, nothing beats the uncomfortably friendly confines of Angel Island Theater. Add the pugilistic acting skills of resident troupe Mary-Arrchie, as expended on a Pinter classic, and you're assured of an emotional black eye. "The Caretaker" deals with Aston, a timid junkie, Mac, the former derelict who looks after Aston's miserable two-bedroom apartment, and Mick, the jerky brother who causes problems for them both. Critics love how the Mary-Arrchies tease out the comedy in this bleak situation, making Pinter's script simultaneously bruising and fun.
